Looking for more kind TV

2020 has ruined my ability to enjoy TV that is anything other than gentle and kind. I’ve watched all the great British baking show that Netflix has to offer, same with Queer Eye and Schitt’s Creek. I’m looking for more shows in the same vein - ones that leave me with a smile on my face after watching. Any suggestions? [more inside]

Why doesn’t it VIBE

I put candlesticks in wine bottles. Thendrip poetically. THEN (the horror,) the drips pull away from the bottle, like a skirt in the wind, and a) look silly and b) break off. Physics, please tell me why that happens. Also is there any way I can prevent it, because AMBIANCE. I just want bottles ensconced in wax drips, is that too much to ask?

Low-tech presentations for young children

Anybody here familiar with that old school technology of making presentations (usually for pre-school children) using a cloth backdrop (maybe felt) and sticking cut out objects on and off of it, for storytelling? I need to rig up something like that for online teaching of kids. Pretty sure it doesn’t use Velcro (what they call “magic tape” here in Japan) because the objects affixed to the background come off very easily, and quietly. Anyone who knows about exactly what it is that they use for this, please inform! Thanks.

Best device for streaming from your computer to tv in [2021]?

What device do I need to stream media from my computer to my tv? Until yesterday, I used a 3rd Gen. Apple TV with iTunes for this. Spray foam on wet rubble walls - yea or nay?

So, we bought a century home (circa 1895) six months ago here in Ontario and are slowly discovering all the quirks of owning this old gal. As you might expect, temperature control is proving tricky: the first floor is quite chilly all year round, while the second floor is hot in summer and cold in winter. We're planning to upgrade the attic insulation, but the other question that has come up is how to insulate the basement - more details inside. [more inside]

is there anything like a cough drop, but not sweet?

All the cough drops I've been able to find, to moisten my dry mouth or stop a tickle in my throat, are too sweet. Especially the sugarless ones. Most sugarless cough drops are sweetened not only by the hard-candy base, made of isomalt or some such indigestible sugar, but also by added sucralose, acesulfame-K, stevia, aspartame, saccharin, or other artificial sweetener. The amount of any artificial sweetener used in anything is always vastly in excess of what I can stand the taste of. (Why do people like everything so sweet!) I must be a supertaster for sweetness. How do you make duck sauce specifically à la Chinese-American restaurants in New England? This is a variant of duck sauce ubiquitous in the Boston area but that as far as I know hardly exists elsewhere. It has the texture of a watery slurry and tastes fresh and bright. It is not viscous or syrupy. No grocery-store duck sauce that I've tried before is of this variant. I have a vague memory of being told that it is a mixture of applesauce and soy sauce, and while I don't detect soy at all, the applesauce rings true-- heck, if you told me it's just pure thinned-out applesauce that actually sounds pretty believable. Only looking for responses from people who know, or have a source that knows, about this specific type of duck sauce.

Repairing a broken tub faucet

Internal piece of the tub faucet broke, a round white sleeve part. How do I remove this so I can replace the faucet? From some quick research this seems like a part that's been screwed onto the stub, that comes as part of the whole faucet assembly, though it's on extremely tight and I'll need to find a good wrench to see if I can unscrew it -- but I wanted to check that was the correct approach before attempting to remove it.

Replacement socks for Under Armour allseasongear brand?

Hi all, I bought these socks from a few years ago, but it looks like it has now been discontinued. It was the allseasongear brand. I liked them because it was a thick sock and kept my feet pretty dry compared to other brands. I asked UA if there was a replacement but they said no. Help me spend PTA money: Ideas for remote activities for K-8 students

There is a pot of PTA money available, and I am looking for ideas for how to spend it. All of the students are learning entirely remotely and will continue to do so for... well, who knows, but assume a while. These could be physical items to buy and distribute (e.g., sketchpads), or online activities (e.g., a remote music performance), or...? Links to lists of concrete ideas are okay, and even better if you have suggestions for things that have worked well for you and your students (either as a parent or a teacher).
